I gave up smoking while pregnant with my first child. It was the thing to do - in those days. It was not easy though; and we had no gums or patches to help us then, and no images of diseased organs adorning the packets.
Lung cancer
Gruesome photos adorn the packet
Another ploy to deter the few
Who cigar smoke or tobacco chew
There’s no sympathy; no charity
The research purse is even closing
Such self-inflicted disease opposing
A habit formed over many years
It is tough to stop those long slow drags
No, never easy: giving up fags
And when you do, the stigma remains
It hangs in the air, a stale smoke curl
And in your lungs: death fit to unfurl
